Master bedrooms seem to always come last, don’t they? At least that had been the case for us. I had spent years decorating and giving lots of time and thought to nearly every other room in our house, but never put much thought at all into our bedroom. My hubby recently told me that he really would like a nice place to retreat to at the end of the day, and that was all I needed to light a fire under me to finally do the dang thing and make us a beautiful room (on a budget!).
Going in to this design, I had lots of adjectives floating around in my head, and most of all, I was after a FEELING we would have when we went to hit the hay at the end of a long day. Serene. Airy. Comfy. Casual. Relaxed. Organic. Muted Tones. Personal. Unique. With these in mind, I hit the ground running!
First, a few before photos. To say the least, it was super dull and boring and not us at all.
We started with a fresh coat of paint (Sherwin Williams Alabaster) on every wall, except for the one that our bed sits on. I wanted the accent wall to really stand out, which is why I chose a white for the rest of the walls. Alabaster is such a great, slightly warm -but -not -too -warm, shade! It is amazing how much it brightened up the room and gave me a perfect blank canvas to work on!
Cost: $15 (had rebate)
Next, we framed out our window (I have details on that on my Instagram page, if you’d like to see a how-to right now). This detail was 100% worth the money we spent on it. It brings such dimension to the room, and really helps convey a custom look.
Cost: $41
Then, we moved on to something I had never done before: SHIPLAP! We went back and forth between doing shiplap and board and batten, but I thought shiplap would add a casual, relaxed feel in the room, and that is exactly what I wanted. I will write up a completely separate post on how we shiplapped, but you can check out the videos on my Instagram in the mean time!
I chose a paint color that I am absolutely in love with now, and I got super lucky that it was my first and only sample that I bought when picking out paint for the shiplap! That color is ‘Contented’ by Sherwin Williams, and it is SO good. It’s a sage green with some blue, and it is dark enough to be effective without taking away the airiness in the room. YESSS. I really scored on that one.
Cost (shiplap + paint): $103
Now that we had our “base” for the room, I could really picture everything that I wanted to purchase for it. I knew that I wanted to start by refinishing our IKEA Rast “dressers” (ie, nightstands), because that was going to be such a simple way to save money on what might have otherwise cost us at LEAST $300. I have an entire post dedicated to how I re-did these beauties HERE.
Cost: $5 (had stain and hardware)
Next up was the bed: I DREAMED of an upholstered bed in here. I really did. But I simply couldn’t find that one checked all the boxes. So, I decided to be flexible and go with a metal bed at an excellent price point, knowing that we could later get the bed of my dreams. Sometimes, guys, you just can’t let perfection be the enemy of good! So, I chose THIS bed, and here’s the kicker: I have NO regrets! The quality is AMAZING, especially for the price point, and I actually really love how the black metal contrasts against the green wall and ties in the hardware on the nightstands. The bed doesn’t squeak or even feel “loose,” either. MEANT TO BE!
Cost: $177
The other larger purchase I made was of THIS little cabinet that houses some of my beauty products (because we have a teeny (and I mean TEENY) master bathroom. I don’t know that it’ll always stay in here or even house the same things, but in this season of life, it’s perfect for what I needed. Plus, isn’t it adorable?!
Cost: $205 (on sale)
It was finally time to accessorize – my fave!! I saved quite a bit by making a lot of the art I hung, and using things I already had.
I painted and framed this canvas, and this was easily my favorite project of the entire make-over! I actually had a lot of requests to purchase one of these, so I put them up in my Etsy shop HERE!
Here’s the break down of what I spent on all the details that made the room truly feel like OURS:
Curtains: $18 (Had rod but spent $3 to extend it with a dowel. Spent $15 on drop cloths for the curtains)
Rug: $145 (on sale)
Gallery Wall: $17 (had or made everything here)
Fiddle Leaf Tree: Free (had gift card to Lowes!)
Basket for Fiddle: $20
Lumbar Pillow: $25
Bedding: $50
Framed photo above bed : $34 (I took this photo in Germany and also plan to have this in my Etsy shop soon)
Vase: $15
Candles: $8
Lamps: $60 (on sale)
Hamper: $32
Throw blanket for bed: $20 (on sale – I got a twin)
Grand Total: $990!
The only thing missing that I wanted in here is a bench for the end of our bed. I did make one (also on my Instagram), but it just didn’t turn out right for the space. It happens! I will be sure to update you if/when I do find the perfect bench!
I hope you have found some inspiration here, friends! As always, be sure to tag me on Instagram or stare with me here if you try one of my projects. I love seeing your creations!
