Our Fall Kitchen Shelves

Current Favorites· DIY + Decor· Uncategorized

I love fall and all of the “cozy” that comes along with it. And I REALLY love adding fall kitchen details. Although it stays warm through October where we live, I like to bring some touches of fall warmth inside so I can get myself all hyped up for pumpkin season!

I am a more minimal decorator at heart, and I don’t really find myself all that drawn toward the “typical” fall decor. Making subtle changes by adding warmer tones and textures are what I enjoy for fall, and that’s what I have done with our kitchen shelves this year! I also like to keep function in mind, as our house is small and every bit of space has to function, including these shelves.

First, the before:

I always keep things light for summer, but these shelves were even a little TOO minimally decorated for me, and not super functional.

The changes:

I started by removing everything so I had a blank slate to work with.  I immediately put the Dutch oven on the stove, because- hello- it’s soup season! It just makes sense to store it where it will live for the next six months. Ha!

I took down the art that had more of a summery feel and traded it out for the more moody pear painting. I also painted a watercolor that had some deeper tones. That replaced the watercolor pear I had previously painted.

Next, I traded the plant for this stack of dark green bowls (hellllo again, soup season!). I find that in the cooler months, I crave abundance. So adding a whole stack of bowls felt right to me. These bowls are also functional and will simply be stored in the cabinets when spring or summer rolls around. Or, I may find that I love them still during that season, and they’ll perhaps stick around!).

I swapped out the DIY pottery for a more earthy-toned vessel that also has great texture and interest. I also love how the seeded eucalyptus tied in with the green bowls. It’s green, but it’s shape and texture feels more fall to me.

Finally, I added a big round basket, a few books, and a pretty wooden pear.

That’s it! I’m so happy with this new feel for the cooler months to come. I love that this will carry through until spring time, as I sort of decorate in two seasons around here, vs four. The only thing I may add during the holidays are some twinkly lights!
